The process begins with the crop being cut, this usually takes place just a few hours prior to being needed at the drying plant (this ensures the end dried product is of high quality). A short while after being cut it is turned to allow any excess surface water to evaporate. The next step is to put the crop into a row and it is then harvested with a forage harvester and taken to the drying plant.
A triple pass dryer running at high temperature is used to extract the moisture from the crop, typically reducing moisture content to around 8-15% (initial moisture content varies depending on weather conditions/length of time cut, but would usually be in the region of 65-75%). Once dried it is then milled through fine screens. From here the dried product goes one of two ways. It is packaged in 25kg bags as Meal (coarse flour type consistency), or alternatively it is pelleted.
